Another charitable status U-turn?

Friday 15 September 2017

A proposal to remove charitable status from independent schools comes round almost every year. Rather like the flu threat...

This latest instance grew out of the Tories' manifesto pledge that "independent schools would be required to sponsor an academy or set up a free school". Instead, the DfE would set up a new unit “to help broker voluntary partnerships between schools in the two sectors”. Er, you mean like the Independent State Schools Partnership and schoolstogether.org? This retreat from the original pledge is essentially saying that "the independent sector is way ahead of us and we are going to insist that they keep on doing exactly what they have already been doing for some time. And, if they don't, we'll be cross."

Ho hum. No more to be said.
